People rushing to and fro

Racking up what they owe

Filling their day with this or that

Unaware of where they are at

Working all day from nine to five

Forgetting what it means to be alive

Just enough money to stay afloat

Invisible hand around their throat

Earth falling through bottomless space

I don’t recognize a single face

  1. I thought I’d check out your blog, and I’m glad I did. I think our world has become so fast-paced it’s like a constant power-hungry race to get to the top. So many people get sucked into it and by the time they realise, it’s very difficult to pull back out. Few people really take the time to ask themselves why they are here and whether this is who they really want to be. I particularly like the line: “Invisible hand around their throat”. I really worry what the world is turning into… Xx Lily

  2. Glad you stopped by…yes “invisible hand” was coined by famous economist Adam Smith. Here is his definition of the “invisible hand”.

    “As every individual, therefore, endeavours as much as he can both to employ his capital in the support of domestick industry, and so to direct that industry that its produce may be of the greatest value; every individual necessarily labours to render the annual revenue of the society as great as he can. He generally, indeed, neither intends to promote the public interest, nor knows how much he is promoting it. By preferring the support of domestiek to that of foreign industry, he intends only his own security; and by directing that industry in such a manner as its produce may be of the greatest value, he intends only his own gain, and he is in this, as in many other eases, led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention. Nor is it always the worse for the society that it was no part of it. By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it. I have never known much good done by those who affected to trade for the publick good. [emphasis added].”

  3. Ah, the 9 to 5 rat race. I have not had a job with set hours in over a decade. Sometimes it feels like we ride a balance between stability and creativity. “Unaware of who they are” makes me think we find ourselves through expression and beauty, which usually comes 2nd to money unfortunately. “invisible hand around their throat” is a great description of how we ignore our fate and press on as if our little lives are the center of the universe, when we are so temporal. Beautiful work!

  4. Hand to mouth, Tincup, and stress in abundance…Making sure our minds are occupied with living day by day, and not looking to the future… Can it take care of itself?.. Can it heckerslike!! 😉 I wish for a time when we can stop, take time out to look around and smell the flowers, We have some in our town centre I wonder how many are able to stop and appreciate xPenx
